The surface of the desk needs to allow a place so you can position a monitor directly in front of you, at least 20 inches away. The desk should provide a stable work surface and not be wobbly. The work surface of the desk should have a dull or a matte finish to help minimize reflections and glare. A desk that is adjustable may be the ideal solution if multiple people will be using the same desk.
Sitting for long hours in an awkward or unnatural position can lead to neck and back pain which in turn can lead to repetitive strain injury as well as Carpal tunnel syndrome. A good ergonomic desk allows the user to adjust the height and angle of the keyboard shelf and monitor shelf for a more natural posture. It should also allow for proper clearance for the user’s legs as well as allow for natural placement of computer accessories to avoid putting the user in an uncomfortable position when attempting to work at their desk and use a computer.
The first step is to be aware of how you sit at your desk for long periods of time. Most people will slouch down into the chair, or they will lean forward onto the desk and hunch their shoulders. This posture can stretch out your spinal ligaments and strain the spine. To alleviate this problem, you should make sure you have adequate lumbar support from your chair, and align your lower back directly against the chair back. If you are unable to do this comfortably, invest in a lumbar support cushion so your lower back can rest directly onto the cushion. This will help insure that you sit up comfortably and don’t slouch.
